On Safari With Gert 12 January 2016

12 January 2016

This afternoon we entered the park with a group of 9 students from The USA, staying for one night only. On the way to camp for check-in we saw a small herd of Plains Zebra, as well as our first herd of Impala for the day. There were many lambs with the Impala herd, most of them lying down together in a shady spot, supervised by some of the adult females.

After a quick lunch break and checking in to our accommodation, we continued our drive, heading out to a nearby waterhole. This proved to be the right place to be for some afternoon action, as first we saw an African Fish Eagle catching a fish, followed shortly by a crocodile catching a fish. Then, as we were about to leave, one of the guests spotted some elephants leisurely feeding on the far side of the waterhole. We watched for a while and realized that it was a small breeding herd and they were on their way to the water. We sat and watched as they came down for a drink, a little nervous as there was a very young baby, which I estimated less than 2 months old, in their midst. After drinking, they walked around to another spot where they had a mud bath and played around in the water for a short while.

Shortly after we found 2 magnificent Sable Antelope Bulls and also some Giraffe crossing the road in front of our vehicle and browsing on the side of the road.

At one point, upon rounding a bend there was a Elephant bull in full musth in the road. He crossed the road, but as soon as we stopped to watch him he decided that he was not at all happy with our presence and gave a bit of a warning charge to get the message across and the adrenaline pumping!

Our last sighting of the day was of a large bull White Rhino grazing past our vehicle and crossing the road behind us bringing and end to an action-packed afternoon.

A new beginning to a new safari and we were joined by twelve students.

We went out for an afternoon drive in warm humid conditions and enjoyed first glimpses of Impala,  Zebra, waterbuck, kudu, warthog, giraffe, klipspringers, common duiker, vervet monkey, elephant and cape buffalo.

The highlight was a sighting of a male White Rhino close to the road. We watched and followed him for a while before he crossed the road in front of us and disappeared through the dense sickle bush.

11 -12 January 2016

With a rapid drop in temperature we indulged in some magnificent sightings which for Brad, Sarah and Catherine were really hard to chose a highlight!!

In amongst seeing the big 5  ( again! ) their choice was a rather unusual sighting!!!

Whilst observing a great Lion pride and cubs down below us resting in the river bed we spotted 2 huge Hippos leaving their small pool of water and sprinting up the banks in a flurry! Turns out a large White Rhino had come down to drink and scared them off!

This would all have been in reverse if it was dark!!!

Our new group is on a good wicket with 5/5 and Spotted Hyena ticked off!!!

This afternoons drive is going to be epic!

On Safari With Robbie 8 January 2016

8 January 2016

The first safari for me on day 1 went really well!!

With keen Swiss clients and suitable weather conditions we entered through Phabeni gate and saw general game like it was coming out of fashion!

After a break at Skukuza camp we came across the days highlight which was 2 Lion sightings not very far from each other and very close to the road!

The first being 4 very strong Lioness with a young large male and the second being 4 males sleeping close to the road!

In the afternoon we spotted a magnificent pairing of 2 Sable Bulls, A large herd of Buffalo and 1 rather crazy Elephant bull!

9 January 2016

Today we set off in pitch darkness Nina and Luko were rewarded with some unique sightings of all the big 5.

However for them the highlight of their day was the 3 Cheetah brothers that they encountered on their sunset safari!

The 3 males were spotted on the road performing to their best ability!!!!

Brad and Sarah joined me for a short afternoon drive from 16 -30 to 18-15 and luck came their way fast spotting W.Rhino, Buffalo, Elephant, Impala and Waterbuck but their highlight was a female Leopard snoozing on some warm rocks close by!!!

10 January 2016

Today was rather wet and drizzly which had an effect on sightings although when one puts it all down we had phenomenal locations of Elephant, W rhino , Buffalo and general game!

Our 2 top sightings ended up tied as the best of the day ... That being 1) A Hyena clan on the hunt nice and close to the road and 2) A herd of 25 Sable Antelope also close to the road!
