On Safari With Curtis 29 July 2015

29 July 2015

A new tour and our first safari of it. We only had a couple of hours and it was dominated by one sighting.

We found two young male elephants close to the road and we were enjoying watching them we heard the familiar breaking of branches.

More elephants, three more to be precise, two females and a young calf. They moved within a few meters of us and the adults continued to eat. The youngster had other ideas trying to suckle from its mum but she didn't want this and kept on forcibly pushing it away. But this calf was persistent and after being pushed away four times mum finally gave in and the youngster had a drink.

While this happened further down the road a family of banded mongoose decided to scurry across the road.

After drinking the youngster decided to investigate us coming closer raising its trunk and having a good smell of us while mum just carried on munching. So lovely a sighting we stayed for about forty minutes.

Also seen steenbok, common duiker, kudu, Impala, zebra and warthog.

On our arrival at Phabeni gate we checked in and took a slow drive towards our overnight camp Skukuza.

General game was spotted as follows: Impala, Kudu, Zebra, Waterbuck,Warthog, Giraffe, Steenbok, Common duiker, Rhino, Buffalo.

The highlight of the drive had to be with a herd of elephant that crossed the road right in front of us. It was an awesome sighting as many elephants of different ages and sizes crossed. Guests love seeing the larges land mammal.

We set out along the Sabi river towards Lower Sabi for breakfast. Initially rather quiet however this changed just before arriving for breakfast where within 2kms of each other we had our two highlights for the day.

Firstly we spotted 6 lioness and 7 Cubs all enjoying the morning sun. Cubs playing together and pretending to stalk mom and others. Great to spend so much time with them, eventually we moved on as our breakfast awaited.

No sooner had we moved on and out walks a Male Cheetah right in front of our car.

This to was a fantastic sighting as it headed in the same direction as ourselves.

Guests once again were able to get a good look as well as fantastic photos of this brilliant animal.

General animals spotted:

Rhino, buffalo, elephant, hippos, crocodiles, waterbuck, Impala, bushbuck, vervet monkeys, Baboons, giraffe, kudu, warthog, steenbok, common duiker and (14) more lions.

On Safari With Curtis 28 July 2015

28 July 2015

The last morning of the tour and off we set again looking forward to more sightings.

The highlight of this morning was at a watering hole where we found a pod of hippos all out of the water enjoying the morning sun. As always with hippo it's great listening to the vocalist ion as when one starts it begins a crescendo of calls.

Also seen kudu, waterbuck, a family of dwarf mongoose enjoying the morning sun on their termite mound, zebra, giraffe, white rhino, elephants, lions and vervet monkey.

Then time to say goodbye to Samantha and Matthew who are to carry on their South Africa travels. Been a pleasure having you guys on tour.

On safari with Robbie 27 July 2015

27 July 2015

So today we set out with an incredibly excited American group of 10 with an age group ranging from 7 to 77!!

Special locations including superb Elephant herds with tiny calves, Buffalo herds ranging from 5 to 100! Numerous W.Rhino sightings with a solid total of 9 for the day for this much discussed Mammal. A highly active Spotted Hyena den with pups so small they hardly could balance to some just gradually developing their spots to 6 fully developed adults who were extremely vocal!!!!

Vast amounts of Kudu, Zebra, Giraffe, Bushbuck, Warthog, Impala ,Waterbuck, Hippo and Wildebeest were also sighted!!!

The bird kingdom was out in abundance with the highlight here being 3 Southern ground Hornbills walking next to us fully vocalizing for 500 meters!!

However as a group we decided that the Black Rhino bull sighting in the late afternoon was today's and the trips highlight!!!

Not impressed that we had spotted him in some thick bush, he gradually approached us with a aggressive stance and continuous scent marking !!

At one stage this critically endangered African mammal was 50 meters from us for brilliant photographic opportunities!!!

We left the Park with a passionate and happy group who now realize they need  more time in this incredible Park🐯!!!

Safe travels to Matt and his crew back to the state of Texas USA!!!

On Safari With Curtis From 26 July 2015

26 July 2015

A new tour and the first activity was the sunset drive. A beautiful sunset, a shot of Amarula and then sightings of rhino, kudu, waterbuck, bushbuck, Impala and scrub hare made for a great first experience of the Kruger.

27 July 2015

Today can be split into three parts, two of them were extremely quiet, the third very productive!!!!

The highlight of the day was our hyena sighting. Six adults all outside their den sunbathing. Then after leaving the sighting only to return later we found a young cub, still completely black, suckling from mum.

Our second highlight was a sighting that lasted only about thirty seconds. But this animal is seldom seen and so it is something to savor when it is spotted. The animal in question was a honey badger which as soon as we saw it started to move away. Luckily for us the grass was short and it followed a footpath giving us a bit more time to watch it.

Also seen elephants, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, warthog, kudu, waterbuck, zebra, wildebeest, Vervets, hippo, crocodiles, Impala, steenbok, bushbuck and common duiker.

Birds included southern ground hornbill, black stork, wooly necked stork, African fish eagle, magpie shrike and purple crested turaco.
