On Safari With Karen 14 May 2015

14 May 2014

The Sundwner Safari is one of those drives that we call a hit or miss drive. Somehow it is either a great success with lots of animals showing themselves during the drive, or it is super quiet and you'll be lucky to see an impala. However in wintertime you can usually count on a lovely sunset :-).

Today it was one of those awesome drives where the guests were treated to a lovely sunset, a glass of amarula and on top of that plenty of animals. Apart from impalas, a kudu bull, baboons, dwarf mongooses and a spotted genet, the highlights of today's drive was seeing two cheetahs together (briefly as they walked off into the grass as soon as they spotted the vehicle), a sighting of about 8 wild dogs, a rare find, and an amazing herd of buffalo (which was consisting of 100s and 100s of buffalos if you ask the guests)!

All in all a great start of our safari!!

Today we set off, along the river towards Olifants hoping we could bump ourselves into a cat on the prowl, this didn't happen, however we came across a very beautiful Sharps Greysbok and could spend some time watching him as he went along his daily task, not to concerned about our presence.

The other great sighting was the Kori bustard that Bill spotted on our drive towards Satara for breakfast.

Other animals include: zebra, waterbuck, giraffe, steenbok, warthog, buffalo, elephant, Impala, crocs, hippos, vervet monkeys, chackma baboons and many different bird species.

Day four was onto Letaba for us as we slowly start heading south.

Highlight today was on the afternoon drive were we found a massive elephant bull.

Although the day was filled with many different elephant sightings, this one stood out due to his size and how calm he was with our presence. Great photos were taken, with the afternoon light fading on his face, we returned to camp realizing how fortunate we are to observe such beautiful animals so close to the car with nothing but time chasing us.

Other animals seen:

Impala, warthog, steenbok, Nyla's, crocodile, hippos, buffalo, kudu, waterbuck, zebra, giraffe and many bird species.

We look forward to the travel to Olifants Camp tomorrow.

On Safari With Mark 12 May 2015

A highlight for us on our safari today was when we drove into "crooks corner", where 3 countries join namely RSA, Moz and Zim. This is the most north we can go and on the extreme north to south package it's always one of the highlights. Great fever tree forests as you enter the corner and great photos could be taken of this tranquil spot in Kruger.

Our second highlight was the massive African rock Python lying on the side of the road. This specimen was easily 6ft long.

General animals spotted: Impala, Nyala, kudu, warthog, zebra, steenbok, chackma baboons, vervet monkeys, squirrels, buffalo and elephant.

Tomorrow, we start with heading down south passing Mopani onto letaba for the night.

There was one main aim on this morning’s short drive and that was to find the tawny cat which had avoided us since day1!

With some team work from fellow safari rangers we managed just that even though the sighting was like 3 minutes!

A lioness was spotted and then disappeared!

A trip of a lifetime had come to an end for Jen and Ethne where they saw 6/7.

We wish them safe travels on route to the US and hope to see them back on safari soon!

Highlights for today must both go to antelope species:

We were lucky enough to get a herd of tsessebe antelope right next to the road at the waterhole in the tropic of Capricorn loop.

Further to this we found a herd of Eland antelope not to far off the road. Both male and female just stood watching us in the morning sun.

Other animals:

Impala, waterbuck, buffalo, elephant, warthog, giraffe, blue wildebeest, zebra, crocodile, hippos, mongoose and many different species of bird Including the ostrich. (This was one of Nancy's highlight and one of the reasons for her return).
