On Safari With Curtis 19 - 20 April 2015

19 April 2015

A start of a new tour and the first activity was the sundowner drive, a nice relaxing way to start the tour and experience Kruger later in the evening. were buffalo, elephant, impala, klipspringer and hippo.

20 April 2015

This morning was a cold start and soon the cold turned to a thick cover of fog. Only being able to see fifteen meters in front kind of limits the ability to find animals and for the first thirty minutes nothing was spotted. As the fog cleared we found our first highlight.

Found by a colleague we found ourselves surrounded by a pack of African wild dog. The pack was very active and wherever we looked, left or right, in front or behind we could see dogs. The dogs weren't concerned with the cars and would just run along side the vehicle giving us plenty of time to get that perfect photo.

The second highlight happened fairly soon after as we found a clan of hyena, again all around us the number of animals was in the double digits. Big and small interacting with each other around us. Such was their comfort with us a smaller hyena decided to have a little nibble on the back of my vehicle which got him a little reprimand from me. Nevertheless a great sighting.

Other animals seen today were elephants, rhino, buffalo, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, impala, giraffe, warthog, sable, vervets and hippo.

Birds seen include lilac breasted rollers, blacksmith lapwings, fish eagle, cape glossy starlings, red and yellow-billed hornbills and red-billed oxpeckers.

As Matt and Ali were on a sundown safari yesterday afternoon spotting: Impala, zebra and a distant elephant, we set out with a purpose of spotting as many animals as possible In the time left for this quick 2 night.
Our first highlight was definitely the 4 females that caught an impala at shitlhave dam. Great visuals and photos taken of these big cats devouring their pray in such a short period (+-15min).
Our second highlight had to be the majestic white rhino that walked next to our car (+-2m) just grazing on the shoulder of the tar. Once again this was a special moment for the guests as they enjoyed watching this big fellow go about his daily task of feeding.
Other animals include, Impala, kudu, common duiker, steenbok, warthog, spotted hyena, waterbuck, zebra, giraffe, elephant, buffalo, crocodiles, hippos, dwarf /banded mongoose and numerous birds throughout the day.
Over all this has been a great day with great sightings for the two guests.

Today our highlight came in the form of a solitary mammal which was a magnificent Sable bull that we picked up late afternoon!

The horns still damp from the mornings rain were shining and a magnificent pair they were!

In the morning we also came across _ 4 lioness on an impala kill, which produced some spectacular sound effects!

General game was rather quiet but Buffalo , W.Rhino and Elephant were seen on numerous occasions !!

Tomorrow we leave at the crack of dawn !

Our safari started in pouring rain on route to Kruger but our 2 enthusiastic guests still left in torrential rain on the sunset drive where they saw good Buffalo and Elephant sightings!

Todays highlights came in the form of 2 sightings!

The first being where we were following a spotted Hyena down the road and suddenly it came across a Leopard sleeping on some very low granite outcrops which we couldn’t originally see!

The leopard woke up angrily and gave the Hyena the fright of its life!!!

At about 11 am the next great sighting occurred where we picked up a male Cheetah totally relaxed and walking down the road!

This is the male who performs and perform he did with all his scent marking right next to our vehicle!!!! Two thrilling sightings indeed considering it was cold , rainy and windy all morning!

Other sightings were mating Lions , a huge Buffalo herd crossing the road as well as a large herd of Elephant real close to us making up the big 5 for the morning!!!

General game included Giraffe, Kudu, Impala, slender mongoose as well as Dwarf mongoose ,Waterbuck and grey duiker!

This afternoons drive awaits!

Afternoon Safari:

This afternoons safari we were joined by Katey , Amanda and Mark who strengthened an already strong team

There were two highlights and they were basically the only 2 sightings of the afternoon!

At approx. 16:00pm we came across 5 W.Rhino and 1 very young calf! They were in supreme condition and approached us grazing slowly!

Further down the road at approx 16:45pm we came across 12 Wild dogs on the road! They proceeded to undertake 2 attempted kills on W.Rhino and Zebra respectively without any success!

We followed them once returning back to the road for 4,6 km allowing for fantastic photographic opportunities!!!

This sighting brought the magnificent 7 to Chad and Amy who were beyond excited!!!!

It was all we had time to see as we headed back to camp very grateful for all these magnificent creatures of Kruger!
