On Safari With Gert From 29 December 2015

29 December 2015

This afternoon we entered the park at about 16:00, making our way to our camp for the night.

Shortly after entering we saw a few vehicles stopped, but apparently we arrived a few seconds too late and had just missed a Leopard walking into the bush. We continued and saw some good general game, including many Impala, Zebra and Kudu.

About an hour into our drive I noticed something looking slightly out of place on one of the lower branches of a Marula tree.

To our delight, it was an adult female leopard sleeping in the tree. We watched her for a while and she eventually woke up, lifting her head to survey her surroundings, before getting up and out of the tree. We lost sight of her and continued towards camp.

We also saw a large breeding herd of elephants as well as many bulls, solitary or in small groups.

Towards the end of our drive we also saw 2 very large male White Rhinos, both fairly good sightings as they seemed very relaxed and were quite close to the road and in the open. A fairly short, but sweet introductory safari setting the tone for the days to follow!

30 December 2015

Setting out bright and early on a fairly cool morning, our first sighting was of a small breeding herd of elephant not far out of camp. They were very relaxed even though they were on both sides of the road and with cars constantly passing through, dissecting the herd. Their deep rumbling noises fascinating the guests as they checked up on each other, making sure there were no undue disturbances from passing vehicles.

A nearby waterhole yielded some general game in the form of a large hers of Impala drinking as well as a family of Warthogs with small piglets grazing nearby.

Not long after we passed an old Rhino carcass which was still being fed on by a large number of vultures, predominantly White-backed and also a few Hooded Vultures, together with 7 Spotted Hyena. The sounds of the squabbling Vultures and the loud crunching of bone as the hyenas tucked in to the leftovers really adding to the authenticity of the experience. They were not the only ones enjoying breakfast, as shortly after we came across 2 male and 2 female lions feasting on a buffalo that must have been killed early last night. There was not much meat left on the old bull, but it still seemed quite fresh and I suspect that there were more lions around, probably just taking a break to digest.

On arrival at the scene the 2 males moved off to a nearby shady spot, leaving the 2 females at the scene. They got up, first one, shortly to be joined by her companion and we watched them feeding on the buffalo carcass for a few minutes before settling in the shade about 3 meters from the carcass and from the road, affording us a great view of the entire process.

It was also a good morning for birding as we got to see Martial Eagle, Brown Snake-Eagle and a Bateleur perched on trees quite close to the road in the early morning, offering good photographic opportunities.

31 December 2015

We set out at dawn this morning and it paid off again as the first animal we saw, about 10 minutes into our drive, was a young male leopard in the road as we rounded a bend. He was a bit skittish and went into a thicket on the side of the road.

We slowly drove past the spot, turned the vehicle around and waited. Less than a minute later it came back out and carried on walking down the road. We followed it, not too closely as it was still quite skittish and broke into a trot every now and then.

After following him for a while, he took a pathway leading into the bush, eventually moving out of sight, but not before pausing in a gap to stare back at us and give the guests a good picture opportunity!

Next up we got a very relaxed breeding herd of elephant foraging on both sides of the road moving past us, with barely a glance in our direction. It is always a special experience observing these unique creatures when they are in such a peaceful mood! We also saw many Bulls of various ages feeding at regular intervals along the way, including a few in musth on the trail of the females.

A little later, we noticed a large traffic jam ahead, the kind that usually indicates only one thing: leopard! What luck we had, as on approach, while trying to figure out where to look, said leopard, a magnificent male, came walking out of the grass, crossed the road in front of us and continued down a drainage line and out of sight!

Towards the end of the day we found 2 Sable Antelope bulls grazing nearby and getting comfortable for the night, settling in the tall grass at the foot of a large granite outcrop.

A great Safari to see out 2015!

On safari With Amanda From 29 December 2015

29 December 2015

Hot, hot and hotter today in the Kruger but that didn't keep the animals away.

After an interesting bush walk my 3 American guests and I took a nice slow drive to skukuza.

We were entertained by 3 bull elephants play fighting...this proved too much for them as one by one they gently laid down and had a sleep, We listened to the birds calling and 3 very loud snoring elephants...amazing.

The sun was beating down and we had no updates of cats, always nice to see but never guaranteed. Beautiful baby zebras along the way joining a herd of wildebeest all happily eating the plentiful grasses.

Lots of tawny eagles today along the Doispan road too. We saw reedbuck and a glimpse of a sable as well as impalas.

The last leg of our safari was 12kms we had to be back for sundowner drive as we got closer to camp we saw resting on a termite mound sleeping a very large male leopard literally 300m from the tar road back to the gate...very lucky to see as he soon became aware of us stared into our eyes and then slunk away from view.

Another hot but amazing day in the Kruger.

30 December 2015

As the year draws to an end it brings me my last guests of 2015! We all head out after my guests returned from a great bush walk seeing the tail end of a leopard!

Elephants galore today as hot as it was they seemed to be enjoying our company.. Plus a few marula fruits. A tiny baby entertaining us trying to work out how to use his trunk picking up sticks and just as quickly dropping them.

Further on we watched 3 very cute baby baboons chasing each other around a tree on the left hand side of the road.. On the right hand side of the road there were at least 10 vervet monkeys, I wondered if there would be any interaction between the two species but they happily entertained themselves on either side of the road!

Lots of birds today ,my guests armed with their check list ticked off crested barber, black shouldered kite, violet backed starling, juvenile bataleur, tawny eagle, goliath heron and black headed oriole to name a few.

Our last drive gave us a beautiful golden hour when the sun is lowering it gives a beautiful golden warmth to the bush, lots of baby impalas, kudu and zebras grazed happily in front of us.. no cats yet but tomorrow is another day in the best place on earth!

31 December 2015

New years Eve 2015! The day started with a full breakfast for everyone and then we headed out to skukuza.

Despite the heat there were plenty of beautiful elephants close by to the road, 3 lovely bulls challenging each other not bothered by us in the slightest!

Zebras along the way with a few adorable baby ones hanging out with the impalas.

At skukuza we got an update on lions at high level bridge we arrived and there under a guarri bush were a male and female lion, Quite a far visual but worth the trip. As we were leaving one of the other guides told us of a buffalo kill that lions had made earlier, only 8 kms from the lions we'd just seen so off we went and parked on the bridge and to our left were 2 male lions hiding from elephants that had just chased them away from their kill! After spending time with them we headed back for lunch and a cool down.

The journey back gave us more elephants kudu and lots of zebras. A lovely way to end 2015! Happy New Year to everyone.

1 January 2016

Today we said goodbye to lovely guests but not before a short drive.... News of a leopard and lions filled us with anticipation, we looked on the koppies for the leopard, no joy, we looked on the loop for the lions, no joy!  So we were entertained by a chameleon painstakingly crossing the road, shielding him to make sure he reached the other side of the road! Far, far across from shithave dam we saw a lone sable antelope.

Impalas lots of buffalo and zebras along with kudu were close to the gate as my guests departed leaving me with my last 3 guests.

We decided to meet at 3:30 for the pm drive and we expected to just drive and see what we see. As we turned onto circle loop we were confronted by a huge bull elephant walking along the road, he came close to us before turning off into the bush.

We drove around the koppie and I said to my guests let's just sit and look for the leopard, after only 5 minutes there we spotted the flick of a tail and then a big male leopard stood up and stretched slowly walking down the koppie and walking right in front of us across the road.. and then he was gone!

Amazing to encounter a leopard.. we then agreed to head home as it started to rain

we took a little loop and there in a marula tree was another leopard climbing down!

A quick visual but none the less a leopard!

Great way to start 2016!

2 January 2016

Today was the final day for my 3 lovely American guests. As we set off for their final drive we had no expectations, the best way to be, expect a nice chilled drive and then maybe the bush will surprise you and today it did!

After driving a km or so we saw zebras and impalas grazing together, after our photos were taken we drove slowly away and there bounding up the tar road came 2 wild dogs. After they had passed us I did a quick u - turn and we followed them, They spotted the impala and chased them straight into the bush, a baby impala was separated from the herd, as hard to see as it was, the thing that amazed me was I noticed the zebra were running, not away from the wild dogs ,but straight at them, it seemed like they were trying to save the impala as if it was one of their own?! The kill was quick and hopefully enough to fill them for a while.

We then headed, exhilarated, to pretoriouskop and 5mins away from the camp was a beautiful male leopard walking slowly into the bush!  It was lovely to see and we sat and watched as he disappeared.

Not long until our departure so we decided to chill and sit at shithave dam for half an hour. A crocodile and hippo and 5 buffalo were present and then out of nowhere appeared a herd of at least 200 buffalos rushing for the water, amazing to see . We watched them eating and cooling off in the water as the crocodile grabbed a fish and started chomping on it!

A truly amazing way to end a wonderful trip in the Kruger Park!

On Safari With Curtis From 29 December 2015

29 December 2015

Today all the guests jumped on the truck for an early start and we had a great start with two leopards up in a Marula tree within the first ten minutes.

We had plenty of white rhino sightings the best being a huge territorial male which crossed over the road in front us.

But I think the guests favorite sighting was the lion sighting. We initially found a big male lying in the riverbed taking cover from the increasingly hot sun. With a lot of trees and bush making visibility difficult we moved forward to a much clearer opening and there we spotted another male with two females also in the shade.

As we watched we noticed a herd of elephants which walked right past the bushes and the lions down to the water. They had walked just ten meters from the lions but had missed them, although it certainty got the lions attention. As the elephants drank a second herd did exactly the same, walking past the lions without noticing.

We spent fifteen minutes watching the elephants drinking and splashing about before they moved.

The lions, following the elephants departure, then settled down and relaxed a little bit easier.

Throughout the day we also saw cape buffalo,  Impala, steenbok, giraffe, warthogs, waterbuck, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, klipspringer, hippo, bushbuck, nyala, vervet monkey and baboons.

Birds included goliath heron, fish eagle, woodlands kingfishers, yellow-billed hornbill, marabou storks,  blue waxbill.

30 December 2015

On the final morning of this tour we again split into two groups, a couple of us went for a drive where we saw plenty of elephants including a few very small calves.

We also saw lots of Cape buffalo, zebra, giraffe, kudu, waterbuck, warthog, common duiker, Impala and vervet monkey.

Meanwhile the two girls went out on a bushwalk where they enjoyed learning about the smaller stuff of the Kruger National Park.

They also enjoyed a 200 strong herd of buffalo stampeding, luckily not in their direction, a brief glimpse of hyena and they had a go at tracking leopard!!!

Unfortunately although one of the rangers saw the leopard the guests didn't. But they had great fun!!!

Then farewell time as we said goodbye to Gemma, Hannah and Fabricio who are all exploring more of South Africa.

1 January 2016

The first day of a brand new year and a brand new tour. Joining us today were Barbara and David.

On arriving at Numbi Gate we had time for a drive before heading to the lodge. The drive consisted of a missed leopard and a very nice elephant sighting.

The family herd of about twenty had just enjoyed a nice drink and maybe a swim for a couple of them and now as they walked away from the stream a couple enjoyed a nice dust bath!!!

We also saw zebra, Impala, kudu, waterbuck and warthog for a good start to this safari.

2 January 2016

An early start and a early highlight as, after a tip from Amanda, we found African wild dog!!!

We found just one initially but then spotted a second,  they had caught a baby Impala and although a bit in the bush we could see and hear as their small snack was devoured all within five minutes.

They then decided to walk back onto the road allowing for a much better look. We followed them for a couple of minutes before they sharp turned back into the bush.

Second highlight was a herd of elephants busying destroying a tree in the name of food. We sat watching for about ten minutes when we noticed two more walking towards the herd.

We then looked on the other side of the vehicle and were surprised to not only see a large bull elephant but a white rhino standing watching us and the elephants.

Our attention turned to the rhino and we hoped he would come closer to cross the road but he kept his distance. Nevertheless lovely to see!!!

Also seen were Impala, waterbuck, kudu, crocodile, Vervet monkey, baboon, giraffe, warthogs, common duiker, sable antelope, dwarf mongoose, common reedbuck,  klipspringer, buffalo and hippo.

Birds included the woodlands kingfishers,  lilac breasted roller, tawny eagle, grey heron, cape glossy starling, blacksmith lapwings and goliath heron.

3 January 2016

The highlight of todays drives was the lion sighting. Four lionesses had killed an wildebeest and we arrived to find them lying in the shade digesting their meal.

As is very often with lion sightings you don't get much action but they did occasionally move back to the carcass to eat some more.

Later on we returned to the sighting and found three of them lying next to each other, only awaken by the appearance of a kudu. But they were too full to attempt anything.
When we got bored off looking at the lions we also had two white rhino relaxing on the other side of the road.

As the day warmed up we visited a couple of waterholes. At one we found a small group of buffalo, a small bachelor group of elephant playing in the water, a slightly annoyed hippo, two giraffe, waterbuck and Impala making for a great sighting.

New species also included hyena and steenbok.

Birds seen today included yellow-billed hornbill,  lilac breasted roller, hadeda ibis, egyptian geese and african fish eagle.
