On safari With Curtis 5 – 6 October 2015

5 – 6 October 2015

This tour we were joined by Hosea and Pilar for a very quick one night safari. That had been fortunate enough to have spent the last week in Chobe and so had seen many great sightings.

The one thing they really wanted to see was Rhino as they had missed that in Botswana.

We made up with that as we found several sightings of rhino, the best being our first sighting as we found three white rhino grazing right next to the road. We enjoyed them as they carried on moving towards us, crossed the road and then continued to eat.

We also were spoiled as we also had two lion sightings, two leopard sighting, buffalo, elephants, waterbuck, kudu, warthog, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, crocodile, vervets, baboon, Impala, steenbok, common duiker, sable, bushbuck and African wild dog.

A short but sweet couple of days before we said farewell to Hosea and Pilar whose next leg of their African adventure is the lovely island of Zanzibar. Great meeting you guys and travel safe!!!

On Safari With Mark 1 October 2015 – 4 October 2015

So many special sightings over the past couple of days that it's hard to single out specifics.
A highlight for us on the safari was our first Leopard sight in just out of shingwetzi on our way south. Fantastic to watch a female in a dry riverbed walk parallel with the road. As we followed her, we got great photos as she presented herself with clear visuals while she carried on with her daily activity.
Our following day seemed a lot quieter as the temperatures plummeted and the wind picked up. Unusual to have such a variance in weather temperature must of had a impact on the game viewing. None the less we had a great time spotting different bird species as well as some interesting roads could be travelled that hadn't been travelled before. This did help add another specie to our ever growing list as we got a short but great glimpse of a honey Badger. This improved on our PM drive as we spotted a second little guy very busy digging approximately 5m from our car. After he realized nothing was in the hole, he simply gave us a short stare and off he headed on his quest for food.
Once again on our way and just before the Olifants river we spotted another of our leopard highlights, this time a young female sitting in a lead wood gazing out towards the east. After spotting a steenbok, she was down and out in front of us crossing over the road and into what could of been a successful hunt. We wouldn't know as she moved off out of sight.
On our Pm drive and as we returned towards Satara we found a massive Male leopard lying in the short grass watching the afternoon traffic return to camp. After guests got some rather difficult photos due to poor light we entered camp with a certain satisfaction that we had achieved great sightings for the day. This continued though as we sat and enjoyed a sundown drink together while watching the resident Honey Badger do his daily rounds.
Once it was total dark out popped the African wild cat and photos could be taken of this beautiful animal up close and very relaxed with its surroundings
On our AM drive this morning, we decided to travel a road less traveled and enjoyed every minute of it as very few cars came our way. Brilliant Journeys of giraffe and herds of buffalo were spotted and time could be spent with each all on our own. As we once returned towards camp for our late morning breakfast so we were graced with a lioness walking parallel with the road and once again we positioned the vehicle so best photos could be taken. Great condition and wonderful sighting.
Overall, great animal sighting have been experienced with the general feeling of achievement and gratification towards all the animals that have come our way.
Let's see what our next journey provides as one Safari Statement I've come to learn from my Pax is .......it is what it is........ (No expectations). Great to have people on board that are happy with anything nature provides from a Spoor to Lion

3 October 2015
Its incredible how karma works and especially on a game drive!!
Exiting camp with my 2 special Australian ladies .. I heard them say to each other ... " today we are going to respect Kruger and what we see!!!"
Turns out at one particular waterhole we get this ....a) 7 male lions in total, 3 of them feeding vigorously on a Buffalo they killed close by! 2 of them snoozing with perfect visuals opposite the kill on the watering holes bank! 2 of them mating with beautiful females only 60 meters away!!
A herd of Elephant coming down at one stage and chasing the snoozing lads away who then proceeded to cross the road angrily in front of us!!
A herd of Buffalo nervously approaching the waterhole and then stampeding away once they picked up the Lion scent!!!
Herds of Impala, Waterbuck and Zebra drinking with zero interest from the Lions!!!
A Martial eagle surveying the incredible events below him with an attitude of pure endurance!
Lastly a tree Squirrel that entertained us just as much as the Lions did!!!
Before we knew it... It was lunch time where one of the comments from Sue summed it up ... " I went through moments today that haven’t been awakened in me for years!!!"
These 2 ladies showed me the power of bush karma!!!
They expected nothing but everything arrived for them in one particular place .... In by miles the Best Place On Earth!!

4 October 2015

30 September 2015

After collecting our 2 guests for their first day on safari, we headed straight in to the park at around noon time.

As it was the hottest part of a very hot day, we weren't expecting a great deal, but shortly into out drive came across two magnificent Sable Antelope bulls.

A little further on after turning onto a small dirt road, we saw 2 vehicles parked and then noticed a leopard under a small bush, close to the road... It was sitting up and looking around disturbed as there was a large male giraffe close by. Eventually the leopard was unsettled enough by the presence of the giraffe, got up, crossed the road in front of us and slowly moved out of sight.

The next stop was at a waterhole, which was the hub of activity. 4 White Rhino, 2 males, a female and a calf were lying in the shade around the water and 1 of the males was wallowing in the mud, a few meters from a large bull elephant drinking. A few more elephants came down to the water while at the same time 2 lionesses were approaching a giraffe that was standing closely. The giraffe kept a very close eye on one of the lionesses, who were just trying to find a shady spot and trying to avoid the elephants. We eventually left the scene and moved on finding yet another leopard lying in a shady spot close to the road. Further on we found some buffalo to complete our big 5 for the day and then, just before closing time, found our third leopard for the day. It was sitting on a termite mound keeping an eye on some young waterbuck closely at a waterhole. It stalked the waterbuck, crossing the road in front of us in the process, but we lost sight of it in the tall grass. All in all a surprisingly successful day in the very hot conditions...

1 October 2015

After a spectacular sunrise set the tone for a perfect day, we set off on our short morning drive. We had quite an interesting sighting first up - An African Harrier-Hawk or Gymnogene raiding some hole-nests in the trunk of an Marula tree. We watched as it hung upside down, using it's long, flexible legs to grab whatever was hiding inside.

Our brilliant Leopard-luck continued as we then came across one of these beautiful cats, lying high on top of a nearby granite outcrop, surveying the area below while basking in the early morning sun. It got very comfortable and we left the sighting after it had put it's head down for a snooze.

Continuing from there we found a few species of general game, including a large herd of buffalo. We also followed some lion tracks for a while, but to no avail...

A little later, we saw 2 cars parked and on approach spotted, unbelievably, another leopard! This was a youngster, sitting in a tree about 10 meters off the road, keeping an eye on a nearby Impala herd. It sniffed the air trying to establish a direction of approach before getting down and moving on to the next hiding place, which was the low fork of another Marula tree, about 20 meters further in. Here it sat waiting very patiently as the Impala grazed, ever closer... The Impala got up to about 15 meters from the cat, oblivious to its presence... Then one of the more vigilant Impala, must have spotted the leopard getting a bit eager and sounded the alarm call; blowing the leopard's cover...

The young leopard then nonchalantly sat in the fork, paying them no more attention, before jumping down and heading in the opposite direction and back to the drawing board! The Impala, still alarm calling, kept a very close eye on it and followed it for some time, making sure not to let it out of sight...

After that we visited a nearby waterhole with the hope of finding a crocodile and there was one out sunning itself on a sandbank...

Mission accomplished, it was time to head back and say goodbye to our guests, who left with expectations exceeded. A short, but very sweet, 2 days!

Setting out today putting the thoughts of the poor young Elephants fate behind us little did we know that by 5 pm we would have ticked off the big 5 just for today!!

The 2 Epic sightings of the day were undoubtedly the mating lion and his 3 partners and the incredible spotting of a male Leopard by Shaye one of my guests!!! we were the only vehicle sitting with this Leopard for like 45 minutes with a 5/5 visual!!!

One has to also mention the 3 majestic Sable bulls we encountered as well as the audios and visuals at the Spotted Hyena den!!

It was a truly magnificent and memorable day!!

30 September 2015

Today the guests went on a bush walk and thoroughly enjoyed learning about footprints and plants and they saw a fair amount of general game too!!

We bid farewell to our merry  four who are continuing their journeys to Cape Town and Vic Falls!

28 September 2015 – 30 September 2015

Been North in the Park is fantastic as very little traffic on the roads keeps the sightings extra special.

Highlights for these past 3 days has to be the following:

In our drive north towards shingwetzi we came out of mopani and slap bang into the 2 Roan antelope Bulls walking down the road. Absolutely fantastic to see them up close and personal. These animals were 5m away from us and so so relaxed.

After spending approximately 30min with them we turned the car around and continued with our drive and once again had a fantastic Honey Badger walk out in front of us. He stood in the middle of the road and watched us roll up to him. This was great, as he then turned and headed off into the bush with a mission. My guests loved the way he moved as he scouted around looking for something to eat.

Our next highlight was our first morning drive out of shingwetzi as we turned north and drove approximately 5km up the road we spotted a pride of 8 lions, enjoying the morning sun.

On our second morning we decided to head up to Punda Maria for Breakfast and on our way we had two very special moments with the first male Nyala antelope been spotted for the trip and further down the road we found a female Sharps Greysbok.

Great to be able to spend quality time with such fantastic animals.

Massive herds of Buffalo (700) and Large amounts of elephant (100) on one drive back to camp.

Every couple of kilometers there is bound to be a dazzle of zebra crossing the road or blue wildest and Kudu.

Further to this we've spotted: giraffe, Impala, warthog, dwarf, banded, slender mongoose ostrich tsessebe, hippo and crocodile.

Looking forward to the next drive, day or week as the list grows of all the animals spotted.
