On Safari With Curtis

2 August 2015

The start of a new tour and this afternoon it was time for a short drive.

In just a couple of hours we saw Impala, waterbuck, a pod of Hippo sunbathing, zebra, a family of dwarf mongoose, giraffe, common duiker and sable.

But the highlight was coming across two rhino in the middle of the road. Initially a bit wary of our presence they soon relaxed and went about their business, which was eating, giving us a great opportunity for photos.

Today's highlight was the sudden appearance of a cheetah as we drove. We followed it as it walked along a pathway, crossed the road and then disappeared. A short but very rewarding sighting.

Our second highlight was the same cheetah which we saw in the afternoon. By now it had killed a kudu calf and was busy stuffing itself, vultures where gathering in their dozens and when the cheetah finally walked away the vultures feeding frenzy began with wings flapping and birds screeching and squawking it was an incredible sight.

Meanwhile the cheetah had moved away to digest its meal and to give itself a much needed clean.

Also seen were hippos, buffalo, white rhino, Impala, steenbok, common duiker, bushbuck, klipspringer, banded mongoose, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, warthog, kudu, hyena, African wild dogs, waterbuck and crocodile.

Birds included lilac breasted roller, fork tailed gringo, wooly necked stork, Maribou stork, bataleur, red and yellow billed hornbills and magpie shrikes.
