On Safari With Robbie 2 November 2015

2 November 2015

With a full house of guests one doesn't always have the time to introduce Kruger’s big 5 and more but when there is positive karma on board ... Things can happen!

I battled to believe I would better the Lion sighting of 2 days ago.. But I did with the total highlight of the day being a large Male Lion roaring next to our vehicle!

The echoing vocals across a nearby open grass area brought 2 of his brothers closer and I would have to say a sighting 10/10 occurred!!

To add to the day we managed to find all the other big 5 members ... Including 3 epic leopard sightings ...

We were all overjoyed!!

On Safari With Gert 1 November 2015

1 November 2015

After lunch and check-in with our new arrivals, we set out for a late afternoon drive.

It was a very hot day and by departure time it was still well into the 30's...

Our first sighting for the afternoon was a male White Rhino which was leisurely grazing under a shady tree some distance away. This was a highlight, as Rhino was number 1 on the wish list!

We also found very good general game throughout the afternoon, including a mixed herd of Impala, Zebra and Giraffe. There was a small baby zebra in the herd and we watches it trying to hide behind it's mother, it's long legs the only thing betraying it's presence.

Another highlight of the afternoon was a small breeding herd of elephant. We watched them feeding for some time and could see some youngsters barely visible above the tall grass...

The drive ended with a beautiful Saddle-billed Stork roosting in a dead tree, silhouetted by the sunset!

Today was spent chilling before heading off to the airport for Kitty and crew!!

Not surprising as on their sunset drive they got Spotted Hyena which was the last super predator needed to be found so all in all they got the Super 8 ... Namely ... Leopard.. Lion ... Cheetah ... Spotted Hyena ... Wild dog ... Buffalo ... Elephant and Rhino!!!

We wish them a great stay in Cape Town!

On our last morning drive we encountered some new animals of this tour. We saw a klipspringer on top of the rocks as well as a hyena which was still awake at this late hour. Well, late for a hyena anyways, as for us it was still before breakfast. She was hanging around her den and it looked like she was waiting for the arrival of the rest of her clan as she was looking around expectantly.
Our second highlight was seeing a group of seven southern ground hornbills. They are very rare and critically endangered so it is a treat to see them at all. But what made it special was that two of them were singing. Well, a hornbill's sound is not really singing, but they were calling out together. As the only car present we were able to enjoy it without background noise.
Other interesting sightings: two separate elephant bulls, plenty white rhinos, a very large buffalo herd crossing in front and behind us, blue wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, kudus, a warthog mum with piglets (sooooo cute), impalas and vervet monkeys.
