On safari With Curtis 26 May 2015

26 May 2015

So this morning we set out off on our morning drive trying to find the elusive leopard trying to complete the magical big five. No luck this morning but our highlight of the day includes both the other two big cats.

The first highlight was a tip off from a colleague about two lionesses which had been seen walking along the road. When we arrived at the sighting one had moved into the bushes but the other had found a cool shady area right next to the road giving us a great view of her. We sat and watched as she panted heavily in the morning heat.

While we were there the number of other vehicles was low and so we were able to spend plenty of time with her before she got up and walked away into a even shadier spot.

Our second highlight was a cheetah sighting. Initially lying it was an average sighting as the cheetah was about thirty meters away. We waited to see if it would move closer to us and eventually it did move. Unfortunately it moved in to the bush but the direction it was going was towards the road so we moved to the tar road and waited.

Five minutes later out it popped just in front of us and we were able to follow for a few hundred meters before again it disappeared. Guessing at its path of trajectory we positioned ourselves nicely and relocated it several times before it finally gave us the slip.

Other animals seen today included the cape buffalo, white rhino, giraffe, warthog, zebra,  kudu, waterbuck, impala, common duiker, klipspringers, hippo, vervet monkeys and a slender mongoose

Birds included a pair of fish eagles, southern ground hornbills as well as red-billed, yellow-billed and grey headed hornbills.
